LM78L15 Description

LM78L15 is a positive fixed voltage regulator IC available in TO-92 and other small packages. It is an IC of LM78Lxx series which contains many other fixed voltage regulator ICs such as 5V, 6V, 8V, 9V, 10V, 12V, 15V,18V and 24V. The IC is same as its bigger version LM7815 but the only difference is its different package and also the output current. The LM7812 can deliver output current of upto 1000mA whereas LM78L15 is capable to provide 100mA at the output. Hence if you require a low current version of LM7815 then you can use this IC without any drought.

The IC has many built in features such as over heat shutdown, safe area protection, short circuit protection etc. which makes this IC robust and reliable to use in commercial devices.

As regarding to the standby current or quiescent current consumption LM78L15 only require 3mA to 5mA current in quiescent mode which also makes it ideal to use in portable and battery operated devices.

To get accurate and stable 15V at the output the user must provide atleast 18V at the input because the input voltage must be 2V to 3V higher than the output to get stable output.

Replacement, Equivalent and Other Part Numbers

78L15AC, 78L15ACZ, if cant find the substitute ICs then you can also use LM317LZ adjustable positive voltage regulator IC and get fixed 15V on its output by using only two external resistors.

How to Safely Long Run in a Circuit

To get long life performance with this IC do not use it to its max ratings and always use it 20% below from its maximum ratings. The maximum output current of the IC is 100mA therefore do not drive load of more than 80mA. Do not provide more than 35V input to the IC for more safety provide max input voltage of 28V to 30V DC. Always use or operate the IC in temperature above 0 Celsius and below +125 Celsius and store the IC between -65 degree Celsius to +150 degree Celsius.
