IRFP460 Transistor Explained / Description:

Today we are going to discuss about a quite interesting MOSFET which is IRFP460. IRFP460 is an N Channel MOSFET device available in TO-247 package. This transistor is having many useful features which are as follow:

Require low gate drive power:

One of the good feature of this transistor is that it is simple to drive means it require low gate power due to which it can be operated directly from the output of ICs, microcontrollers and other electronic platforms such as arduino, raspberry pi etc.

Fast Switching:

It also has fast switching speed which is in nanoseconds due to which it is ideal to use in applications where high speed switching is required.

High Drain to Source Voltage:

The transistor also has high drain to source voltage due to which it can be used in variety of high DC voltage and AC designs and circuits.

Isolated Central Mounting Hole:

The transistor has isolated central mounting hole which is also a plus point. Other features are dynamic dV/dt rating, ease of paralleling, repetitive avalanche rated.

Beside the above features the transistor also has quite good specs. As mentioned above the maximum drain to source voltage is 500V, maximum continuous drain current is 20A, max pulse drain current is 80A, max power dissipation is 280mW.

The transistor’s primary applications or which the transistor is designed for are relay drivers, high power transistor drivers, switching regulators, motor drivers, switching converters but it can be used in wide variety of general purpose applications.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use:

IRFP460 is primarily designed for motor drivers, switching regulators, switching converters, driving high power relay and transistors but it is not only limited to these uses and can be used in wide variety of applications.

Applications:

BMS Circuits

UPS Circuits

Switch Mode Power Supplies

DC to DC converters

AC to DC converters

Motor Drivers

Solar Power Supplies

Solar Chargers

Battery Chargers Circuits

Audio Amplification Applications

Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:

To get long term performance with this transistor the designer or user but follow the below guidelines. First of all do not use any transistor to its absolute maximum ratings and always stay 20% below form its max ratings. The maximum drain to source voltage is 500V therefore do not drive load of more than 400V, the maximum continuous drain current is 20A therefore do not drive load of more than 16A, use a proper heatsink with the transistor and always store of operate the device in temperature above -55°C and below +150 °C.
