2SC5359 Transistor Explained / Description:
2SC5359 is an NPN transistor that comes in a TO-3PL package. This transistor is mainly designed for power amplifier applications but can also be used in other applications, which we will discuss later in this article. Some of the good features of the transistor are high collector-emitter voltage, good collector current, can provide up to 100W of audio amplification, and availability of its PNP complementary.
The pin configuration of the transistor is as follows: The first pin of the transistor is the base, the second pin is the collector and the third pin is the emitter. The collector pin of the transistor is also connected with the heatsink tab of the transistor.
Looking at the absolute maximum ratings of the transistor the collector-emitter voltage is 230V, collector current is 15A, collector-base voltage is also 230V, emitter-base voltage is 5V, base current is 1.5A, junction temperature is 150°C and storage temperature is -55°C to +150 °C.
As discussed earlier, this transistor is designed to be used in audio amplifiers but can also be used for other applications such switching, power supply circuits, control circuits etc.
2SC5359 is available in two different versions according to DC current gain or hFE and can be identified by the alphabet written after its part number. If that alphabet is “R” then its DC current gain will be 55 to 110 and if it is “O” then the DC current gain will be 80 to 160.
How to Use the Transistor:
2SC5359 can be used as an amplifier and also capable to work in other applications. As it is a BJT transistor so the using procedure will be same as we use any other BJT transistor.
Applications:
High power audio amplifiers
Audio amplifier stages
Battery Management and Charging
Motor Drivers
Power supplies
UPS
Drive load of up to 15A
Safe Operating Guidelines:
To safely use the transistor, do not use it at its absolute maximum ratings. Using the transistor at its max ratings can put stress on the transistor and can weaken its performance in the long run. So the best practice is to use it at least 20% below its max ratings. So, for example, if its maximum collector-emitter voltage is 230V then we must not drive a load of more than 184V. The maximum collector current is 15A, so we will not drive a load of more than 12A. Operating under the safe temperature range is also important, which is from -55°C to +150°C, and using a proper heat sink is also important.
