IRFP150 Transistor Explained / Description:

IRFP150 is an N Channel power MOSFET with many good features. The transistor is available in TO-247 and other packages; it is a reliable and ruggedized transistor capable for use in commercial circuits. It also has good specs due to which it can be used in wide variety of applications, some feature of the transistor are:

Simple drive requirements:

The transistor has simple drive requirements due to which it can be used directly at the output of ICs and microcontrollers and also at the output of many electronic platforms such as arduino and raspberry pi.

Fast Switching Speed:

The fast switching speed capability makes it reliable to use in applications where fast switching speed is a must requirement.

Low RDS(on) resistance:

The total RDS(on) resistance is also very low. The RDS(on) is the resistance between drain to source of the transistor in the ON state.

Above are few of the features of the transistor, other features are low input capacitance, very good high voltage stability, high temperature reliability etc.

Looking at the technical spec and maximum ratings of the transistor the maximum continuous drain current is 41A, maximum drain to source voltage is upto 100V, max power dissipation is 230W and the maximum drain to source resistance in ON stage or RDS(on) is  0.055Ω.

The main applications or the applications for which this transistor is built for are motor controls, inverters, Choppers and switching power supplies. But it can also be used in variety of other applications.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use:

As already mentioned above the main applications of the transistor are motor controls, switching supplies, inverters and choppers but it can also be used in other applications such as DC to DC converter, audio amplifiers and many other.

Applications:

Switch Mode Power Supplies

Uninterruptible Power Supplies

Battery Charger Circuits

BMS Circuits

Solar Chargers

Solar Power Supplies

DC to DC converters

Motor Driver Applications

High Power Audio Amplification Applications

Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:

To get long term performance from IRFP150 do not use it to its absolute maximum ratings and always use 20% below from its max ratings. The maximum continuous drain current is 41A therefore do not drive load of more than 32.8. The maximum drain to source voltage is 100V therefore do not drive load of more than 80V. Use a suitable heatsink with the transistor and always store or operate the MOSFET in temperature above -55°C and below +150 °C.
