IRf1405 Transistor Explained / Description:

IRF1405 is an N Channel MOSFET and it is also called automotive MOSFET. It is available in TO-220AB package. As the name suggests this MOSFET is primarily designed for automotive applications such as car wiper controller circuit, climate control circuit, EPS or electric power steering etc. But the transistor can be used in wide variety of other applications which falls under its specs.

The MOSFET has many benefits such as “ultra low on resistance” which mean the maximum drain to source resistance is very low which insures the transistor dissipates less heat. The Low RDs on resistance also ensures very minimum low of energy during use. Fast switching speed which makes it ideal to use in applications in which there is requirements of fast switching. Up to 175°C operating temperature makes it a reliable device in high temperatures. Other benefits are dynamic dv/dt rating, repetitive avalanche Tjmax.

The Specs of the MOSFET are also very interesting the continuous drain current is upto 169A and the max pulsed drain current is 680A. The maximum drain to source voltage is 55V and max power dissipation is upto 330W.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use:

This MOSFET can be used in a variety of automotive applications some of which are mentioned above, other than these applications it can be used in a variety of different applications which can be found under the application’s title below.

Applications:

Automotive Applications

Power Supplies

Solar Chargers & Power Supplies

Uninterruptible Power Supplies

Other Battery Charger Circuits

Battery Management Systems Circuits

Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:

To get long term performance with any component it is recommended to not use it to its absolute maximum ratings and always stay atleast 20% below from its max ratings therefore same applies to the IRF1405 MOSFET. The maximum continuous drain current is 169A so do not drive load of more than 135A, the maximum drain to source voltage is 55V therefore do not drive load of more than 44V. Use a suitable heatsink with the transistor and always store or operate at temperatures above -55 ° C and below +175 ° C.
