2SC1173 Transistor Explained / Description:
Here is another interesting transistor came in front of my eyes while searching for a good transistor for DC applications under 24V. The transistor has many good features such as capability of upto 5W amplification, good linearity of hFE, availability of its complimentary transistor, etc.
The absolute maximum ratings of the transistor are as follows: the collector-emitter voltage is 30V, collector current is 3A, collector-base voltage is 5V, emitter current is -3A, collector power dissipation is 10W, junction temperature is 150°C and storage temperature range is from -55°C to 150°C.
2SC1173 is mainly designed for Audio power amplifier applications but can also be used in other applications such as switching, RF, and a variety of other general purpose applications.
This transistor is manufactured in two different variations according to its DC current gain which can be identified with the help of the alphabet written after its part number. The alphabet “O” represents DC current gain of 70 to 140 and “Y” represents gain of 120 to 240.
How to Use This Transistor:
2SC1173 is a BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor), therefore the using procedure of this transistor is same as we use any other BJT transistor by applying signal to its base, connecting emitter with the ground or negative voltage, and receiving the amplified output from collector pin when used as an amplifier or driving a load through its collector pin when used as a switch.
This is a simple guide on how this transistor works and how we can use it in a circuit. However, to make an actual working circuit you need some basic knowledge of electronics such as how a BJT transistor works, knowledge of Ohm’s Law and calculations of current and voltage, reading and drawing circuit diagrams, and knowledge of simulation software.
Applications:
Low Frequency Power Amps
Audio Systems
Motor Drivers
Switching Circuit
Power Amplifiers
RF Circuits
And Other General Purpose Circuits
Safe Operating Guidelines:
To safely operate the transistor follow these guidelines:
- Do not use the transistor to its absolute max ratings, and stay at least 20% below from these ratings.
- Check pinout of the transistor before using it in your application.
- Always use a suitable heatsink.
- Always store or operate the transistor at temperatures above -55°C and below 150°C.
