2SC2238 Transistor Explained / Description:

2SC2238 is a quite interesting transistor with some very good features. It is an NPN power transistor available in TO-220 package. Features of the transistor are high collector-emitter voltage, high transition frequency of upto 100MHz, good power dissipation, good linearity and availability of its complimentary pair.

Looking at the absolute maximum ratings of the transistor, the collector-emitter voltage is 160V, collector current is 1.5A, collector-base voltage is also 160V, emitter-base voltage is 5V, continuous emitter current is also 1.5A, total power dissipation is 25W, junction temperature is 150°C and storage temperature is -55°C to 150°C.

The transistor is designed to be used in power amplifier and driver stage of amplifiers but due to its good characteristics it can also be used in variety of general purpose applications and also in RF applications.

2SC2238 is also available in two more versions which are 2SC2238A and 2SC2238B which are slightly different from 2SC2238 in voltages. These two versions works on higher voltages than 2SC2238.

Where and How to Use This Transistor:

As mentioned above 2SC2238 is designed to be used in amplifier applications but can also be used in wide variety of other applications. It is a bipolar junction transistor so the using or operating procedure of the transistor will be same as we use any other BJT transistor such as applying signal to its base, applying negative voltage to its emitter and getting amplified output from its collector. This is just a basic procedure how this transistor can be used in a circuit but to make a proper application circuit you will also require some passive components to operate the transistor as desired.

Applications:

Audio Amplifier Circuit

Power Amplifiers

RF Circuits

Switching Circuit

Motor Drivers

And Other General Purpose Circuits

Safe Operating Guidelines:

To safely operate the transistor follow these guidelines:

  • Do not use it to its absolute maximum ratings and always stay at least 20% below from these ratings.
  • Check pin layout before using in your circuit and design.
  • Always use a suitable heatsink.
  • While operating the transistor make sure to stay in these temperature limits -55°C to 150°C.
