2N6028 Transistor Explained / Description:

2N6028 is a programmable unijunction transistor it is also called PUT in short form. The transistor looks similar to a TO-92 package UJT transistor but the internal circuitry is totally different form a UJT.  As you can see in the pinout image of the transistor above, it has three pins like a UJT but instead the emitter, base and collector the pins are marked “A” Anode, “G” Gate and “K” Cathode.

The term “Programmable” doesn’t mean it has some kind of microcontroller inside, it means that it can be controlled by two external resistors connected to its gate. This feature provides more control as compare to a normal UJT due to which it is called programmable unijunction transistor.

When looking at the internal circuitry or internal symbol of the transistor we can see that it is also very different from a UJT and looks similar of an SCR and also works like a small low current SCR.

2N6028 is almost similar to 2N6027 when compared with the maximum ratings. As we have already discussed 2N6027 in a previous post on our website but there is some different in the electrical characteristics such as peak current, offset voltage, valley current etc.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use:

2N6028 can be used in applications such as pulse circuits, thyristor trigger, oscillator circuits but these devices are not only limited to these uses and can also be used in other applications. For example they can also be used in special thyristor circuits.

Applications:

Timings circuits

Pulse applications

Thyristor-trigger

Oscillator applications

Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:

For safely operating any transistor we always suggest not to use them to its absolute maximum ratings and same applies to 2N6028 PUT. The max gate to cathode reverse voltage is 40V so it should be under 32V. The maximum gate to cathode forward voltage is also 40V so it also should be under 32V. The maximum DC forward anode current is 150mA so it should not exceed from 120mA. The storage temperature of the device should be under -55 °C to +150°C and junction temperature should be under -55°C to +150°C.
