2N2905A Transistor Explained / Description

2N2904A is a quite an interesting PNP transistor available in TO-39 package. It is a slightly upgraded version of 2N2905 and an ideal transistor if you want a little better version of other small signal transistors such as 2N4403, 2N3906 or other general purpose PNP transistors. The transistor is basically designed to use in high speed switching circuits and also as an amplifier from lower frequencies (Hertz) to high frequencies (200MHz), it can also be used with its NPN complementary in conjunction so that they can produce better results hence the signals at the output are of better quality with very less distortion. Same as in switching when we use it with its complimentary transistor we will get better switching performance.

Above are some of the applications for which it is designed but due to its versatile feature and characteristics this transistor can be used in a wide variety of applications that fall under its ratings.

Analyzing the ratings, characteristics and features of the transistor the maximum collector current of the transistor is 600mA or 0.6A, which means that we can drive load of upto 600mA with the transistor, The max collector to emitter voltage is -60V means we can only drive load which are -60V, the max emitter to base voltage is -5V which is the maximum voltage supplied from the emitter to base junction more than that can damage the transistor. The total power dissipation of the transistor is 600mW, the total power dissipation means the power of the transistor that converts to heat when the transistor is working. The transition frequency of the transistor is 200MHz which means this transistor is capable to amplify the signals of few hertz to 200MHz. The DC current gain of the transistor is from 50 to 300, the DC current gain determines how much amplification capabilities the transistor has. The storage and operating temperature is from -65°C to +200°C, the storage and operating temperature of the transistor determines the minimum and maximum temperature between which the transistor can be used or stored.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use

2N2905A has good features and characteristics due to which it can be used in a wide variety of applications that fall under its ratings. It can be used in audio preamplifier circuits, audio amplifier circuits, RF circuits etc. The detailed list of its applications can be found under the applications heading below. The using procedure of this transistor is the same as we use any other BJT transistor.

Applications

Switching Loads under 600mA

High Speed Switching

Complimentary pairs

Radio & RF Applications

Signal Amplifier

Audio Amplifier

Darlington Pairs

Many Types of General Purpose Applications

Safe Operating Guidelines

For getting long term performance it is essential to operate the transistor in its safe region. First of all do not use the transistor to its absolute maximum ratings and always stay 20% below from these ratings. So according to this procedure, the maximum collector-emitter voltage is -60V, therefore do not drive load of more than 48V, the maximum collector current is 600mA, so do not drive load of more than 480mA, use a proper heatsink with the transistor, and always store or operate at temperature above -65°C and below +200°C.
