1N5819 Diode Explained / Description

1N5819 is a schottky diode available in DO-41 package. It is the diode of 1N581x series. In this series there are also other diodes which are 1N5817 and 1N5818. All the diodes in this series have maximum output current of 1A. The maximum repetitive voltage is 40V and non repetitive peak fwd current is 25A. The maximum power dissipation of the diode is 1.25 Watts.

Schottky diodes are different from the rectifier diodes for example 1N4007 is a rectifier diode, there are many differences between these two diodes and both are built for different purpose and applications to make a better decision what type diode we should use in our application first we have to understand the difference between them.

The internal structure of both are different from each other, the schottky diode junction is between an n-type semiconductor and a metal place, whereas the rectifier diodes are the simplest p-n junction diodes. The rectifier diodes can handle higher voltage across them for example 1N4007 can handle 1000V due to which they can be used in high voltage circuit of upto 1000V other rectifier diodes can handle even more than 1000V, these high voltage capability makes them ideal to use in high voltage diode bridge circuits on the other hand schottky diodes cannot handle high voltage loads but then still perform well in low voltage diode bridge circuits. But Schottky didoes are not limited to these uses and they can perform better than rectifier diodes in many other applications such as in fast switching applications. Its fast switching speed makes it capable to perform well in many types of high frequency applications, radio and other RF applications, inverter applications etc.

Schottky diodes are also energy efficient and provide low power loss in many situations, these energy efficient capabilities also makes them ideal to use in low voltage, variety of solar applications and battery operated applications.

Where We Can Use It

As mentioned above schottky diodes are low voltage diodes but capable of fast switching due to which it can be used in buck converter circuits, solar circuits, reverse voltage blocking, RF detector circuits, Radio signal circuits, voltage booster circuits and in many other applications.

1N5819 Replacement and Equivalent

1N5817 and 1N5818 are mostly same and they are of same series, the only difference is there voltages so if your load requirements are below from 20V or 30V then you can easily replace 1N5819 with these two diodes.

Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings

To safely operate this diode do not drive load or more than 1A, load voltage must be under 40V. Always connect the diode in the right polarity, and always operate the diode at temperature above -65 °C and below +125 °C. The storage temperature of the diode is from -65 °C and below +175 °C.
