TIP102 Transistor Explained / Description:

Before we discuss the TIP102 transistor, we will understand a little bit about how a darlington transistor works. A darlington transistor is a pair of two transistors in one transistor package that is connected in a special way that increases the output gain very much. The TIP102 transistor also provides DC current gain of 1000 to 20000 the transistor comes in TO-220 package and has many features which make it suitable to use for industrial purposes. It has very low collector to emitter saturation voltage. The maximum collector current of the transistor is 8A hence it can drive load of upto 8A and 15A in pulse with the max load voltage of 100V. The base current of the transistor is 1A and max collector dissipation is 80 watts. Moreover the transistor also have low collector-emitter saturation voltage requirements which makes it ideal to use in battery operated, portable and low voltage equipment.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use:

TIP102 can be as an amplifier and a switch for low speed switching. As a switch this transistor is capable to drive load of upto 8A. It can also be used at the output of arduino and other electronic platforms to drive loads. Other than that it can also be used as an amplifier to amplify arduino and other electronic signals.

Applications:

Audio Amplifier Stages

Audio Power Amplifier Circuits

Driving or Switching Loads upto 8A

Battery Chargers

Motor Drivers

How to Safely Long Run in a Circuit:

When we use a component properly it will serve us for years to come. Properly using a component means don’t put too much load on that component and always stay 20% below from its max ratings. Same goes to the TIP102 transistor, the max collector current of the transistor is 8A therefore do not drive load of more than 6400mA and the load voltage should be within 80V. Use a proper heatsink with the transistor and always store or use in temperature above -55 degree centigrade and below +150 degree centigrade.
