IRF640 MOSFET Explained / Description:

IRF640 is an N Channel MOSFET designed for high speed switching purposes. This high speed switching capability can be very useful in application where switching speed is crucial, for example in a UPS circuit or in any other application where use wants to change the load input power from one source to another.

The transistor is capable of driving load of up to 18A and the voltage can be upto 200V with the minimum saturation voltage of only 2V to 4v at its gate. The pulsed drain current is 72A means this MOSFET can drive load of upto 72A in short intervals or when the load is not continuously connected and only connected for a 300us (Microseconds) time period with duty cycle of 1.5%.

Besides it uses as a high speed switch it can also be used as an amplifier such as an audio amplifier and in audio amplifier stages.



Where We Can Use it & How to Use:

IRF640 can be used in circuits where switching speed important for example in battery backup systems, uninterruptable power supplies etc. and it will also perform well in general purpose switching applications. Other than that it can also be used in building blocks of audio amplifiers.

How to Safely Long Run in a Circuit:

For long term performance we always suggest to use all components atleast 20% below from its maximum ratings and same goes with IRF640. The max drain current is 18A therefore do not drive load of more than 14.4A. The maximum load voltage is 200V and to stay under safe side do not drive load of more than 160V. The maximum pulsed drain current is 72A so the max pulsed load should not exceed from 57.6A. Use a proper heat sink with the transistor and always store or operate the device in temperature above -55 degree centigrade and below +150 degree centigrade.
