2SC3281 Transistor Explained / Description:

2SC3281 is an NPN power transistor manufactured in TO-3PL package. As shown in the image above the of 2SC3281 transistor pinout the first pin (Pin1) is Base, the second pin (Pin2) is Collector and the third pin (Pin3) is Emitter. The backside of the transistor is metal plated with a hole which is used to attach heatsink with the transistor through a screw. The collector of the transistor is also connected this metal plate.

2SC3281 is primarily designed for building power amplifier circuits and can be used to build audio power amplifier of upto 100 Watts. But it is not limited to these applications and can also be used for switching purposes and is capable of driving loads up to 15A. Moreover the maximum collector to emitter voltage is 200V due to which it can drive load of upto 200V and can also be used in high voltage circuits. The maximum power dissipation of the transistor is 150 watts, minimum and maximum DC current gain is 55 to 160 and the transition frequency is 25MHz to 30MHz.

The transistor is available in two different types according to its DC current gain ratings and can be determined by the alphabet written below its part number. If that alphabet is “R” then its DC current gain will be 55-110 and if the alphabet is “O” then its DC current gain will be 80-160.

Where We Can Use It & How to Use:

As discussed the transistor is primarily build for audio power amplifier applications to build high power audio amplifiers of upto 100 Watt. Other than that it can also be used as a switch. The maximum collector current is 15A due to which it can drive variety of loads under 15A such as motors, relays part of circuits etc.

PNP Complementary:

PNP Complementary of 2SC3281 is 2SA1302

Replacement and Equivalent:

2SC6011, 2SD1313, KTC5200, 2SC5200, 2SC5242.

Applications:

High power audio amplifiers

Audio amplifiers output stages

Motor Drivers

Drive load of up to 15A

Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:

To safely operate this transistor do not use it on its absolute maximum ratings and always stay 20% below from these ratings. The maximum collector current of the transistor is 15A therefore do not drive load of more than 12A. The maximum collector emitter voltage is 200V so do not drive load of more than 160V. Using a suitable heatsink with the transistor is must, the heatsink mounting or back metal plate is also connected with the collector of the transistor therefore isolate it from rest of the circuit connections and always store or operate the transistor in temperature above -55°C and below +150 °C
