2N3704 Transistor Explained / Description

2N3704 is a versatile general purpose NPN BJT transistor available in TO-92 package. As regards to the pin configuration, the first pin of the transistor is “Emitter” second pin is “Collector and the third pin is “Base”.

Regarding the maximum ratings it has a maximum continuous collector current of 500mA therefore it can drive load of half ampere or 0.5A. The maximum collector-emitter voltage is 30V due to which it can easily be used to drive load of 1.5V to 24V DC. The max collector-base voltage is 50V and max emitter-base voltage is 5V.

Looking at the electrical characteristics of the transistor the minimum and maximum DC current gain is 100 to 300, collector-emitter saturation voltage is 0.6V, output capacitance is 12pF and base-emitter ON voltage is 0.5 to 1.0V. And according to its thermal characteristics, the total device dissipation is 625mW.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use

It is a very versatile general purpose transistor and can be used in a wide variety of applications such as audio amplification, audio pre-amplification, signal amplification, switching and variety of other general purpose tasks.

Applications

Audio amplifier circuits

Audio pre-amplification

Signal amplification

RF circuits around 100MHz

Switching circuits

And variety of other general purpose applications.

Safe Operating Guidelines

To safely operate this transistor use it 20% below from its absolute maximum ratings. So the maximum continuous collector current is 500mA therefore do not drive load of more than 400mA, the maximum collector to emitter voltage is 30V therefore the load voltage should be under 24V, use a proper base resistor to provide only the required current to the base of the transistor and always store of operate the transistor at temperatures above -55°C and below +150°C.
